This is part of my coursework, I chose to do 'Atmospheres' as my own theme.
This is an atmosphere i've had in my head for a few years now, and have never been able to draw.
So here's my attempt.
[link]
I began with the music, which at the time, felt fitting, however by the end of it, i don't really think it is anymore.

This is somewhat similar to a place I've seen in a dream, and old-ish laboratory full of plants and fish tanks. It included lots of green glass, like here. Unfortunately, it was a rather creepy nightmare :XD:

I love the mood and details in this painting :) The one thing that doesn't look quite right to me is the light. The glass panels, while not very clear, are still fairly transparent, so I think the place is a bit darker than it should be. It's still a lovely setting though :)

How strange! I have creepy nightmares regularly, mostly just stressful ones. I guess I have an over active imagination with dreaming, I dream almost nightly. I did not dream this scene however.

ooh, I see what you mean there, sort of as if I took an underexposed photo, where only a few light details show through, thanks for that!

They do say we dream nightly, it's just that most people don't remember it. I used to have many vivid dreams when I was younger, both happy ones and nightmares, but now I generally don't remember anything when I wake up. You should put yours to good use, there's a lot of artistic fuel in there :)

Perhaps, I've dreamt a few scenes repeatedly, ones I'd like to draw some time, I also like the surreality of them. However sometimes it's just a totally messed up storyline about all the things i'm stressed about shown in really warped ways.
For instance, Lately I've had some really good conversations with my friends about how my family cant open up to one another, be it through anger or anything positive and how we've been left kind of ignoring eachother, as when there's no good there's no bad, so it's kind of mutual ignoring.
I had a dream which i predict has something to do with these conversations, there was a moment in it where I almost got hit by a car, but i couldnt shout at the driver or anything because she wasnt going to listen and I had bagel in my mouth.

I forgot to say that I love this piece. I want this place to exist in real life. I also want more images like this of the place you have created, maybe a pond and trail, hedge garden and gazebo....

Maybe there will be in the future. A lot of the places I draw I desperately wish were real. (particularly the picture of the windmills by the sea.) There are so many scenes I really want to get out into a picture from my head.

Thankyou =D

1. Describe the Mood/Atmosphere within the image.
(e.g. Eerie/threatening/ hidden away/fresh/claustrophobic… e.t.c.)

I think, calm at ease, quiet and reflective.

2. Look at the image I have presented you with. Do you feel anything upon looking at the image? If yes, what do you feel? If not, why do you think you don’t?
I think I would like to visit there to just relax and feel that magical feeling you get when surrounded by beautiful nature.

[link]3. Listen to the music I have given you, while looking at the image, do you feel anything in response, if yes, what do you feel? If not, why do you think you don’t?
OOOO yes, I feel the need to get up and quietly walk down the hall to undiscover some hidden secret, or magic. I feel ...Drawn in.

4. In this image I was attempting to create an dark and eerily beautiful enclosed space with no definite clue to where it is situated in the world. Hidden rooms and corridors would be discovered if one were to wander about the place but it's unclear just how large or how many rooms there are here. A sort of mystical yet gloomy greenhouse seating area. Now look at the image/music combination with my intention for the image in mind.
Do you think I have been successful? Yeah, I totally thought that when you added the music to it! Without the music it was a little less mysterious and more calm, but with it I feel mysteries.

5.What suggestions for my picture would you give to help me to portray said atmosphere? the pole almost in the middle, front left hallway support column, feels like it's seperating the image a bnit, like it's two pictures instead of one. Also the table feels a little too tall the perspective not quite right with the rest. I feel I am low, but not that low down to see that much of the underside of the table surface. Other than that perhaps a hint of hallways or doors where it is grey in the top left.

6.Would you add any more questions to this quiz to help me evaluate my work? Or is there anything you wish to say? Perhaps ask about colors and textures and the perspective.

I cant give out my location or where i go to college/Uni on the internet ;D
But the system in England is very different to America I think, for instance, i dont really know what an art school is or when you're meant to start, here there are just 'art foundations' and art BTECs that you can take after 6th form (the last two years of your highschool, but is optional here.) Art foundations/BTECs are held in various different colleges along with loads of other courses, from IT stuff to cooking, animal care..e.t.c, then various different and specific art courses at Universities afterwards.

ah, yes I suppose safer is better than wise.

hmm interesting. Yeah generally after high school you can go to a college or a trade/vocational school. on the trade schools you only get a certificate and not a diploma, but for things like art it's more about your work then degree for most jobs.

Surely it is wise to be safe on the internet? I do not see anything wise about telling people publically on the internet about where you live/go to college e.t.c..

mm, they say that your portfolio matters more than your grades with art.. which i suppose is the case. To get into most art courses you only need to pass in Maths and English with a C or above.
Forgive me for any typos or grammatical errors, I've got a new laptop and am just getting used to the keyboard. =]

1. Describe the Mood/Atmosphere within the image.
Tranquil, lonely... humid.

2. Look at the image I have presented you with. Do you feel anything upon looking at the image? If yes, what do you feel? If not, why do you think you don’t?
I feel very inspired... Inspired to write and imagine... I miss doing that :(

3. Listen to the music I have given you, while looking at the image, do you feel anything in response, if yes, what do you feel? If not, why do you think you don’t?
It lends and air of mystery to the piece and makes me want to further explore the setting.

4. In this image I was attempting to create an dark and eerily beautiful enclosed space with no definate clue to where it is situated in the world. Hidden rooms and corridors would be discovered if one were to wander about the place but it's unclear just how large or how many rooms there are here. A sort of mystical yet gloomy greenhouse seating area.
Now look at the image/music combination with my intention for the image in mind.
Do you think I have been successful?
I do! I was actually going to say I wanted to find something hidden or secret within as I explored as a result of hearing the music.

5.What suggestions for my picture would you give to help me to portray said atmosphere?
Perhaps if you had made the image larger and revealed more. I think if it were taller, and the building had a tall ceiling it would make the viewer feel small, almost childlike, which in turn might spark the imagination further.

6.Would you add any more questions to this quiz to help me evaluate my work? Or is there anything you wish to say?
Mmm... idk really. I love looking at scenes like this because they really inspire me.

Write and imagine then! Even if you do not show anyone, our imaginations are brilliant escapes from the real world <3

Thankyou -EVER- so much for your reply, it's really great to know that I'm actually acheiving what I intended to for this. =D

making the image taller is a good idea, I was too scared that it would open up the image... I had to think quite a bit how I would make a building look large, but enclosed at the same time.

Hopefully you'll be seeing more scenes like this, I've got a few i'd LOVE to be able to draw one day, so I'm working on it =]

Btw / we can't see the picture in a large view / so it's difficult to tell you things about some technical points.
:stereo: About the music / I don't connect the music you linked and your picture. The music is terribly medivial , with all the references that involves; and your picture, because of the architectureis tipically 19e century and Art Nouveau. The music makes me think to a procession with many people , and the place in the picture is very not so big : look at the table and the chair....
In fact the more I look the table and the chair , the more I feel and I think they are not in the good scale. Their size is too big for a such place : that reduce the size of all the place .

the picture is the size you're seeing it in. There's no larger version.

the chairs and table were intended to be very tall, and the rooms were meant to look very enclosed, yet the building itself massive.. so lots of small rooms inside a big place. =]

Gah, I always have to carefully look to realize it is not a photograph x) I wish I could make art like you do!

1. This picture seems exclusive and lonely, though reflective and peacefully.

2. First off, I feel jealous I can't make something like this. And second, I feel like I want to be there, it looks so serene and thoughtful, a couple of things I need at the moment.

3. Suddenly, the image looks much eerier and I feel it should be in a horror movie.

4. Definitely. Particularly with the walls you can vaguely see through the windows, and the reflections, and the lighting, definitely. The vines contribute to the eery-beauty too, I think. And on top of all this, I still would like to go here and wander until I was good and lost. Then maybe I'd sit and cry because that looks like a creepy place to get lost.

5. Actually, I think you nailed it. And I'm not one to critique things about 38249273 times better than I could do anyways.

6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! (:

Very nice. I love the colors in this pieces.

1. To me the piece gives off a feeling of...relaxation and quite reflections.

2. I feel like this would be a wonderful place to walk on Art, mostly because of the calm serenity it gives off. It seems like a good place to relax and just let ideas flow.

3. My speakers are broken, sadly.

4. I think you have been very successful in this. To me, the fact that there is a large tree visible shows that a lot of space is needed, which shows that there is more to the building then just what you've shown.

5. Hmm. This question was hard. Maybe it could be shown by making one of the panels a hidden door by showing it open just slightly? That's the only thing I can really think off.

6. Extra questions...maybe something to do with the color scheme? Does it or does it not work with the atmosphere? (I think it does.)

Overall, a wonderful picture. Great work.

And it would appear we have the same b-day. XD Happy b-day.

1. I felt it's a calm and relaxing atmosphere at first, like when you're in the middle of a forest or something and all you hear are the birds and the trees in the wind. After a while though, the darkness kinda creeps up on you and it becomes a little threatening D:

2.Like I said before, at first it was really calming to look at at first but after a while the darkness seems to hover over you a little, like, I really wouldn't want to go into the dark bits if i could help it. It's calming but almost like you shouldn't outstay your welcome in this place (Also, I should mention now, I'm too short to properly see my screen, so the colours are a little darker than they would be. I have to stretch up to see them properly SOB)

3. It makes it seem a bit more magical and mystical and fresh. I can imagine the air would be cold. It also makes it seem a bit more eerie. I have no idea if you wanted this picture to be creepy but thats the way it's coming across to me. It's like an old abandoned house sort of creepy, in that it's definintely creepy but also very fun to explore.

4. I think you have been, yeah. The music makes it a little bit more eerie and in a way, sad too. I get the urge to explore it even though it'd give me the willies while doing it haha!

5. Honestly the only thing I can think of would be if you wanted it to be a bit more gloomy, perhaps you could use a bit more blue in your colour scheme, I can see where you've used it and it looks really good but perhaps where it gets darker and in the window panes you could've used a touch more blue? I dunno if that would work but it's my instinctive reaction, maybe i'm going for the wrong thing here...

6. Hehe yet another lovely piece from you! The more I look at it, the more I get a feel for what you were trying to go for. It also seems to close in on you the more you look at it, like it becomes more claustrophobic. I really like how the space seems to stretch on when looking through those windows too, it gives it a nice sense of scale :)

Yea, I am going for gloomy, but not really scary.. however I suppose this is an atmosphere other people might find scary, but i would infact find calming... with only a little bit of something intimidating in the areas I am not in.. like the dark corridors and such.

The putting-more-blue-in is a good suggestion, Thankyou!

1. The atmosphere is haunting, like it has some deep Victorian stories behind it. Reminds me of the Greenhouse in Syon Park with the coffin of Henry VIII.

2. Erm, Content? Like I would quite happily sit there in the "gloom" and contemplate by myself in an environment totally opposite to my usual. As if designed for someone elses grandure, a free gift to be able to enjoy it as well after they're done with it, scraps.

3. Stronger sensations of the second question

4. Hahh yeah, pretty much what I was getting at. Maybe not so much with the endless amount of rooms,.. but looking back at it, the signs of more building at the back would suggest that. Maybe you didn't capture it because I didn't see it at first? But, maybe I missed it at first? xD

5. Not really sure. I think the little lights near the floor are a bit unfitting though

6. loving the yellower glass panes nearer the other arches O:

1. Really mystical and calm. Now it really resembles your first attempt (: atmosphere-wise, that is. It looks kind of shot off from the world outside, as it if was a little world itself, but being shut off like that also gives a certain feeling of safety since nothing bad/evil can come inside

2. Hah, it seems I've already answered that in nr. 1? XD Safety, silence, a place to be when you want to be by yourself and think about stuff

3. The music in the background makes it a lot more .... magical :3 I still have the image of dancing fairies or maybe fireflies (at least some kind of small lights/creatures) in my head when I listen to that song and look at picture. Maybe they're hiding behind that tree? ;D

4. To be honest, I don't reall find it that eerie. Like I mentioned above, it even gives some kind of safety in my opinion. Maybe it's because the light also has some quite warm colours in it, colder green tones or a bit of blue might have made it colder and also a bit eerier.
You do wonder how big that place is, though, especially because you hinted at least one additional room in the background :3 We don't know what that second room looks like and if there are more of them.
It's not clear either whether this place is really abandoned or not. There is a tree in that greenhouse on some kind of soil that seems to be made for smaller plants like vegetables so it would seem that nobody has looked for the greenhouse and the vegetation it in for a long time ... but at the same time, the table and the chairs give off the feeling of someone who's been there not so long ago ... ah, it's hard to describe

5.Maybe try making the light seem cooler?

6.Something like "Where do you think this greenhouse is situated?" might be interesting : D For me, it'd be something like ... a forest that used to be some kind of park before but the area wasn't taken care of anymore so nature took back that area :)

1. A place that once was lively, but now has been hidden away by time/mother nature.
2. I feel joy, because I imagine as if I were to find this place I'd want nothing more than to explore its contents. Like a child stumbling upon a fairytale.
3. Gives it a very elves and dungeons feel. Like I'd find something mystic, like finding mermaids.
4. I don't know if its the light or color, but it feels too cheerful for eerie
5. different lighting or color like a said, not sure what would make it more eerie. Or maybe something like flaws in the glass, cob webs, ect. Not entirely sure, without altering the piece too much.
6. I think its not a lack of questions, more so asking the right person. Like I don't have an answer to how to change it to make it seem more eerie/fit well to your standards/idea. But I know other people can be good at that.

1. kinda abandoned with a hint of mystic.

2. feels like a warm place where you can also hear a light breeze from the outside—making rustling noises while softly touching the leafs—with some exotic birds chirping wonderful melodys from time to time.

3. with the music softly in the background it's like something will happen there—maybe a person in an elegant dress would slowly went from the right to the left immersed reading a book. (also imagine the sound of footsteps to this)

4. hmm *looks up to her thoughts* well, i guess so. :D ... though i don't find it so dark and eerily. well, kinda. but not so much...

5. i'd just add a few leaves on the floor; would give it a nice touch~ :3

6. i'm not good at that kind of stuff... so, no. ^^ ... but i'd like to say that i've probably played to much Myst and am still a huge fan of this lovely adventure series. <3
and your piece reminds me a lot of the wonderful places captured in those awesome worlds, hahww~~ *sigh* )
it's really beautiful * O* the longer i look at it (like for an hour now) the more i wanna walk around and find out about this place.
